ABOUT THE BRAND

Barbara Kavchok Couture

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR BRAND…

The Barbara Kavchok brand is all about creating well-loved pieces of wearable art. As a designer with a fine art background, Barbara takes the artists approach when creating one-of-a-kind gowns for her brides. Since 2016, the Barbara Kavchok brand catered to all brides by providing inclusive, authentic, and sustainable gowns made right in their little Bethlehem, PA studio. Barbara celebrates all love and wants each and every one of her brides to feel like their custom gown is a direct reflection of them.

THREE WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND

Inclusive, Authentic, and Sustainable

What inspired you to start your business?

My mother, Eugenia. She was a designer who had her own brand for years (Eugenia Couture) and after thinking that I did not want to follow in her footsteps and going off to study fine art and illustration, I was eventually bitten by the bridal bug too. After some time working by my mother’s side, I started Barbara Kavchok Couture. I loved seeing the gorgeous gowns she would make and the beautiful women who wore them.

What would you consider the most unique aspect about your brand?

I don’t just see myself as a bridal designer; I see myself as an artist whose mission is to create wearable sculptures for my brides. I love being able to meet one-on-one with brides, whether it is locally at my studio or over Zoom from one of my flagships. Being able to truly understand my bride is key, as it allows me to be the direct link between the dream gown in her head and the finished product on her wedding day. Because I want to cater to all brides and recognize every woman has a unique style and personality, my collection is full of different designs. I don’t put myself in a box as a designer – I’ve made it all! Being able to create custom gowns for my brides is rewarding and so much fun.

tell us WHO’s BEHIND YOUR BRAND

We have a close-knit team of women, including my mother, who are extremely talented and love what they do.

Spill the details about your design process?

Inspiration comes in all forms… My designs always start with a sketch and then come to life on the dress form – sometimes changing along the way. A dress could come out totally different than the original sketch looked but it’s always for the better!

How and where are your collections produced?

We proudly produce all of our gowns in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I have an amazing team of women who work along side me to cut, sew and tailor the designs to perfection. Keeping our team small and our production domestic allows me to ensure that we only use the best quality textiles and send out the most beautifully constructed gowns.

What is your best seller to date?

Either Charleigh or Ivy… We sell a ton of both of these styles because of how romantic they are! The fit of each gown is different but the A-line skirts are always fan favorite, adding delicate laces and even sometimes adding color are why we think they sell so much! We love customizing gowns for brides, too.

What is the inspiration behind your newest collection?

The inspiration for Nouveau comes from finding the light after a very dark time. I think this past year has challenged us all physically, emotionally, and creatively. It was important for me to create a collection that incorporated fun textiles, unique fabrics, and splashes of color to symbolize the light at the end of the tunnel. This collection is so unique and special, as it includes some sleek, simple styles as well as compelling, colorful looks.

What kind of materials should we expect to see in this new collection?

Spray painted Mikado (lots of color) and light and airy tulle, mixed with lots of texture.

What do you love most about what you do?

While I love being able to see the dresses come to life at Market and sending them off for various styled shoots, I adore the creative aspect of being a designer the most. I get to be an artist, illustrator, sculptor, and bridal designer all in one. I am able to put my artistic capabilities to the test, whether it is designing my newest collection or a custom gown for bride.

What is your favorite memory/experience you’ve had involving your brand?

After moving into our new studio space last summer, my team and I have begun this new and exciting rebranding process that I absolutely love. This move has allowed me to really figure out my purpose as a designer, which draws from my admiration for the artistry behind fashion. This new space allowed me to get the creative juices flowing and I have since designed some really amazing pieces that I can’t wait to show at Market.

What is something you wish you knew when you started your line?

When I started my brand in 2016 I was really focused on creating beautiful dresses that would sell and not super into the branding of the whole big-picture. Now, we know how important branding and social media are and put just as much time and effort into that as our designs, I have a staff member who’s sole job is marketing and social media management now!
